Activities for primary schools

Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden has a good range of guided tours and workshops for primary schools. The Friends of the Botanical Garden have been working on this for many years. The GUM has developed a guided tour for the 3rd grade. If you want to delve deeper into science with younger children, we definitely recommend The World of Kina in Ghent.

We would like to give the following information:

  • Reservations can be made up to 4 weeks in advance.

  • We welcome larger groups, but have a maximum capacity per day:

    • Maximum 6 activities per day in the GUM (across all groups)

    • Maximum 6 activities per day in the Botanical Garden (across all groups)

    • Maximum 2 tours per half hour

'Welcome into the scientist's mind'-tour

An interactive tour for 3rd grade primary education

Dive with your pupils into the heads of scientists. Together with a guide, explore what these scientists do and how they think. And discover that using your imagination and daring to doubt are certainly helpful! The pupils will be amazed by how scientists work and think.

The pupils will also investigate on their own during this interactive tour with challenging assignments. Sometimes they will have to think deeply and sometimes they will have to use their imagination.

An interactive tour for pupils at primary school and the first two years of secondary school

Go on a journey of discovery in the Botanical Garden. During our trip through tropical and subtropical regions, we will get to know many useful indigenous and foreign plants. There is no danger of scurvy here. We have food supplies from all over the world!

An interactive tour for third to sixth year primary school pupils

What is the tallest tree in the world? Can plants move quickly? How far are fruits distributed? What is the biggest seed? In this workshop, children will go on an adventure in the Botanical Garden and explore plants, seeds and fruits from all over the world. Pupils will discover, measure and experiment with the extremes of the plant world.

Workshops in the Botanical Garden for primary school pupils

Plant Cluedo

Workshop for fifth and sixth year primary school pupils

During this workshop, the pupils will try to discover why the red panda is sick and what we can do about it. They will search the garden for plants and investigate the structure of plants, flowers and fruits. They will use a stereoscope to study them. They will find their way around the botanical garden with a map, trying to discover more about what happened to the panda.

Due to the capacity of our workshop space, it is only possible to follow this workshop with 1 group at a time.
