Leg prosthesis
Who manufactured the first prostheses?
In Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages amputees would have to make do with wooden stilts and crutches. French surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510 - 1590) developed the very first real leg prosthesis. The prosthesis consisted of a leather cylinder that fitted around the thigh, which was surrounded by a metal cylinder, a knee joint, a metal-clad artificial leg and a metal foot with a hinge and a spring. Paré also designed a hand prothesis complete with moveable wrist and fingers.
What is special about this particular prosthesis?
