Who is Louis Auzoux?
French doctor Louis Auzoux manufactured anatomical models of animals, humans and plants. He was the first person to use papier-mâché for this process, instead of what was customary, i.e. wax, plaster or wood. In 1828, Auzoux founded a factory dedicated to the production of models. After Auzoux died in 1870, the factory continued to exist. It was closed down at the start of the 21st century.
How did Auzoux manufacture his models?
Auzoux based the production of his models on the Parisian doll makers as well as his fellow model maker Jean-François Ameline’s papier mâché technique, which he drastically improved.
Why papier-mâché?
Papier-mâché is a solid material, which consists of paper and glue. Contrary to wax, it is quite resistant to heat and deformations. The material also allows you to construct models from several separate parts, which can be taken apart during a demonstration.
For whom did Auzoux produce these models?
The first generation of Auzoux’ models was intended for use in academic teaching. These models were extremely detailed and clearly showed the anatomical structures of both humans and animals.
